In 2025, the island of Koh Phangan, once primarily known for its Full Moon Party, firmly enters the era of sustainable and mindful tourism. Instead of chaotic beach parties, the focus is now on festivals of culture, ecology, and spiritual well-being.
From December 9 to 13, the Koh Phangan Green & Culture Festival 2025 will take place — an official event organized by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) with local authorities and environmental groups. This is not just a celebration, but a statement about the island’s new identity.
What’s on the Program?
The 2025 lineup focuses on three pillars: Culture, Ecology, Wellness.
1. Cultural Events
- Traditional crafts exhibition: wood carving, pandanus weaving, Thai painting;
- Gastronomy festival: local produce fair — coconuts, mangoes, fish sauce, organic vegetables;
- Floating seafood market: only sustainably sourced, certified vendors;
- Thai folk dances & music: performances by mainland troupes.
2. Eco-Activities
- Beach cleanups: volunteer drives at Haad Rin, Tonsai, Ban Nai;
- Recycling workshops: crafting from plastic and organic waste;
- Lectures on ecosystems: coral reefs, mangroves, endangered species;
- Green cinema: documentaries on climate and conservation.
3. Wellness & Adventure
- Yoga & meditation festival: 5 days of practice on the beach, masterclasses;
- Wellness expo: spa, ayurveda, Thai massage;
- Sports challenges: swimming, SUP, hill cycling.
What About the Full Moon Party?
Yes, the Full Moon Party remains, but in a completely new format:
- Visitor cap: up to 5,000 people (down from 25,000);
- Eco-tickets: part of the fee funds coral restoration;
- No single-use plastic: biodegradable tableware only;
- Mandatory cleanup: attendees receive trash bags upon entry.
The government aims to preserve this legendary event without damaging the ecosystem.
Festival Goals
Not just entertainment, but:
- Raise awareness of Phangan’s natural and cultural heritage;
- Support local producers and artisans;
- Attract mindful travelers, not just partygoers;
- Integrate Phangan into the UNESCO Global Network of Sustainable Tourism Cities.
Outlook 2025–2030
Expected:
- Growth of eco-tourists by 15% annually;
- Development of green hotels with TREES/LEED certification;
- Launch of digital tourist IDs tracking eco-contributions;
- Global recognition of Koh Phangan as a model of sustainable island tourism.
"We’re no longer selling chaos. We’re offering balance," said TAT Southern Director Somporn Chulapathara. "The Full Moon should shine over a clean beach."
