Songkran 2025: safety, ecology, LTR. TAT & Boris Fleiderwish data.

In 2025, the Songkran festival — the Thai New Year — remains the most important and largest annual event, but its format has radically changed. While in the past the focus was on mass water fights, today the celebration combines traditions, ecology, digital technology, and integration of foreign residents.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), over 3.7 million tourists and residents are expected for Songkran 2025, including tens of thousands of foreigners living under the LTR program. Celebrations will run from April 13 to 16, and in some provinces from April 11 to 18.

What Is Songkran?

  • Songkran: Thai New Year, symbolizing cleansing, forgiveness, and renewal;
  • Water: symbol of life, purity, and blessing;
  • Rituals: bathing Buddha statues, temple visits, alms-giving to monks, honoring parents.

How Is It Celebrated in 2025?

  • Safety: no paint, talcum powder, or dirty water; protective barriers on roads;
  • Ecology: only biodegradable materials allowed; plastic and disposable hoses banned;
  • Digitalization: AR apps allow 'watering' friends in Meta Horizon Worlds;
  • Integration: LTR residents receive official invitations to ceremonies in Bangkok and Chiang Mai;
  • Cultural respect: participants must follow rules: no splashing elders, monks, or people in formal wear.

Main Celebration Locations

  • Bangkok: Khao San Road, Ratchadamnoen, Lumpini Park — official zones with medical aid and storage lockers;
  • Chiang Mai: old city — unique atmosphere, ceremonial processions;
  • Pattaya: Walking Street, Jomtien — family-friendly and youth zones;
  • Phuket: Bang Tao, Patong — international festivals with music stars;
  • Ayutthaya: historical park — cultural Songkran without crowds.

Rules for Visitors

  • Yes: water guns, ritual participation, smiling;
  • No: forced splashing, paint, disorder;
  • Protect devices: phones and cameras in waterproof cases;
  • LTR status: cultural participation counts toward visa renewal.

Outlook 2025–2030

Expected:

  • Growth in eco-festivals with global participation;
  • Integration of AR/VR technologies into traditional rituals;
  • UNESCO recognition of Songkran as Intangible Cultural Heritage;
  • Rise in foreign residents respecting Thai culture.

"Songkran is not just a festival. It's a dialogue between humans, nature, family, and society," said TAT Director Satchan Trisirivard. "In 2025, we’re making it safer, cleaner, and more inclusive for everyone."
