In recent years, Russia-Thailand relations in tourism and security have continued to evolve, despite global challenges. Back in 2015, Russian Ambassador to Thailand Kirill Barsky, during a press briefing, addressed key topics: tourism, trade, and security.
Tourism: Crisis and Rising Interest
At the time, Barsky attributed the decline in Russian tourist arrivals to the economic crisis and ruble depreciation. However, he emphasized that interest in Thailand remained strong and was even growing — as a destination for vacation, relocation, and investment.
Since then, the situation has changed dramatically. By 2025, Thailand has regained its status as one of the most popular destinations for Russian tourists. According to the Immigration Department, over 1.2 million Russian citizens visited the Kingdom in 2024, approaching pre-crisis levels of 2013–2014.
Security: Cooperation Against Crime
In 2015, Ambassador Barsky thanked Thai authorities for swift cooperation on extradition. At that time, 18 Russians wanted internationally were arrested, and 17 were deported to face prosecution in Russia.
Since then, bilateral law enforcement cooperation has strengthened. New agreements on joint patrols in tourist zones and data sharing between Interpol and Thai police were signed in 2023–2024.
Support for Citizens: The Importance of Insurance
Barsky also highlighted assistance to Russian citizens in emergencies. He reported that five special medical evacuations of critically ill Russians from Thailand to medical centers in Russia had been carried out within a single year.
The diplomat stressed that travel insurance is critical. Without it, even medical repatriation can become a heavy financial burden.
This advice remains highly relevant in 2025. Medical services in Thailand, especially in private clinics, can cost tens of thousands of baht. Insurance covers not only treatment, but also repatriation, lost luggage, and flight delays.
Modern Context: New Opportunities
Today, beyond tourism, interest in long-term stays is growing. The Long-Term Resident (LTR) program makes Thailand attractive for Russian digital nomads, retirees, and investors. Simplified visa policies, high quality of life, and developed infrastructure strengthen bilateral ties.
Thailand remains one of the safest and most welcoming destinations for Russians — provided laws are respected and trips are planned responsibly.
As past experience shows, effective diplomatic and law enforcement cooperation remains key to stability and mutual trust between the two nations.
