How Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang and U-Tapao work in 2025. AOT & CAAT data.

In 2025, Thailand’s airport system has become one of the most modern and resilient in Southeast Asia. While in 2011 the floods caused temporary disruptions at Don Mueang Airport, today both capital hubs — Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang — operate without interruption, and the new U-Tapao Airport is becoming a key node of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).

As correctly noted in 2011, Suvarnabhumi is located 6–7 meters above sea level, equipped with powerful drainage, pump stations, and protective dikes. This allowed it to remain open even during peak flooding. Today, this system has been significantly upgraded.

Suvarnabhumi (BKK): Gateway to the World

  • Passenger traffic: 78 million in 2024;
  • Flights: over 130 countries, 800+ daily flights;
  • e-Gates: automated passport control in 10 seconds;
  • Safety: 24/7 water level monitoring, AI flood forecasting;
  • Transport: Airport Rail Link express train to downtown Bangkok.

Don Mueang (DMK): Hub for Domestic & Low-Cost Flights

  • Passenger traffic: 42 million in 2024;
  • Airlines: AirAsia, Nok Air, Thai Vietjet;
  • Destinations: domestic routes, China, South Korea, India;
  • Flood protection: drainage canals, pumps, 3 million m³ reservoirs;
  • Transport: buses, taxis, electric shuttles to city center.

U-Tapao (UTP): Thailand’s Third International Airport

Key EEC project, opening in phases from 2024 to 2027:

  • Location: 40 km from Pattaya, near Rayong and Chonburi;
  • Purpose: relieve Bangkok and serve eastern regions;
  • International flights: already launched to Beijing, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul;
  • Rail link: high-speed line to Bangkok (50 minutes);
  • Future: aviation, EV, and logistics hub.

Which Regions Are Accessible?

All tourist destinations in Thailand are fully safe and operating normally:

  • South: Phuket, Krabi, Samui, Surat Thani — via PHUKET and U-TAPAO;
  • North: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai — via CNX and CEI;
  • Central: Pattaya, Hua Hin, Ayutthaya — via BKK, DMK, UTP;
  • East: EEC, free trade zones, EV plants — via U-Tapao.

Outlook 2025–2030

Expected:

  • Launch of biometric passports and digital entry (Digital Entry);
  • Development of metaverses for airport navigation;
  • Global recognition of Thailand’s air infrastructure as one of the world’s most reliable;
  • Growth in foreign residents (LTR) using U-Tapao as their main hub.

"We no longer fear water. We control its flow — on land and in the air," said AOT CEO Nantaphon Nanthachiva. "Our airports are gateways to the future."
