Medical Insurance for a Trip to Thailand in 2025: What Every Tourist Should Know
Packed your bags, booked the tickets, mapped out the route... One last thing remains — insurance. That "optional" document many postpone, but which can make or break your trip.
Why You Need Travel Health Insurance for Thailand
In 2025, Thailand remains one of the top destinations for Russian tourists. Visa-free entry continues, but new requirements are emerging — especially around insurance.
What's New in 2025: ETA System and Insurance Requirements
Introduction of ETA: Electronic Travel Authorization
Starting June 2025, Thailand introduces the ETA system. Previously, tourists passed passport control with no extra steps. Now, they must fill out an online form in advance. One of the fields? Medical insurance details.
Officially, having a policy isn't mandatory. But it’s highly recommended — especially if your insurance meets the suggested criteria:
- Coverage of at least €30,000 (about 2.9 million RUB);
- Emergency medical assistance, hospitalization, repatriation;
- Ideally includes active sports coverage (diving, motorbike rides, trekking).
What Happens Without Insurance?
Thai hospitals do not accept foreign (including Russian) insurance directly. This means you'll pay upfront, then seek reimbursement — often in English, through an international claims process.
Even minor issues like food poisoning can cost $300–400. More serious situations like hospitalization may run into thousands of dollars. There are dozens of such cases in every travel group.
How Much Does Insurance Cost and Where to Buy It
Average cost is $1–3 per day. For a two-week vacation, that’s around $15–45. Less than one nice dinner in Bangkok.
You can buy a policy online from major Russian or international providers. Be sure to check:
- Does it cover sports?
- Emergency evacuation?
- Deductibles?
- Is separate registration with the assistance service required?
Pre-Trip Checklist for Tourists
- Print your policy and store a copy on your phone.
- Write down the emergency contact number on your passport cover.
