In 2025, Thailand's media landscape has radically changed. While the key event in 2013 was the auction of licenses for digital terrestrial TV, today the focus has shifted to streaming platforms, artificial intelligence, and next-gen IP broadcasting. State and private channels are adapting, while audiences increasingly choose online content.
From Digital TV to a Digital Ecosystem
In 2013, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) held an auction for 36 commercial digital TV licenses. Starting price: 500 million THB per license. Total revenue exceeded 18 billion THB.
Today, all these channels operate, but their role has significantly diminished. According to DEPA and MDES, only 38% of the population watches TV via antenna or cable. The remaining 62% consume content online.
Top Platforms of 2025
Market leaders:
- AIS Play — over 12 million users, sports, series, news;
- TrueID — exclusive content, integrated with True network;
- WeTV (Tencent) — K-dramas, Thai romantic series;
- Netflix and Disney+ — international premium content;
- YouTube Shorts and TikTok — primary information source for teens.
NBTC’s Role in 2025
NBTC no longer just allocates frequencies. Its current priorities:
- Regulating online content (including disinformation and deepfakes);
- Protecting viewer rights — hotline 1299, complaint system;
- Supporting local production — grants up to 10 million THB per series;
- Preparing for ATSC 3.0 (NextGen TV) by 2027;
- Collaborating with Google, Meta, TikTok on content moderation.
Artificial Intelligence in Media
In 2025, AI is actively used:
- Script generation — pilot projects at GMM Grammy;
- Translation and voice-over — automated localization into 12 languages;
- Virtual anchors — on NBT and TNN;
- Deepfake detectors — mandatory for all OTT platforms.
Content Classification: What Has Changed?
The original 2013 system (news, children's, family programs) is preserved but adapted:
- Mandatory tags: "for kids", "violence", "politics";
- Automated moderation on YouTube and TikTok;
- Platforms must provide parental controls.
Future: 2025–2030
Expected:
- Full transition to IP broadcasting (ATSC 3.0) by 2027;
- Development of VR/AR news and interactive content;
- Export of Thai content to ASEAN and Latin America;
- Creation of a National AI Media Hub supported by MDES.
