In 2025, the Songkran festival — the Thai New Year — is held under the slogan 'Safe, Clean, Digital Celebration'. While in the past police simply increased patrols, today their operations rely on artificial intelligence, drones, biometrics, and international coordination.
According to the Ministry of Public Security (MOP), over 68,000 officers and volunteers will be deployed nationwide from April 13 to 16. In some provinces, celebrations extend until April 18.
How Does Safety Work in 2025?
- AI monitoring: facial recognition cameras track overcrowding, aggression, and violations;
- Drones: 1,200 UAVs monitor crowds in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya;
- Digital ID: tourists use e-Passport and the 'Thailand Safe' app for instant verification;
- Integration with ImmiDroid: chatbot helps foreigners report incidents without language barriers;
- Automated accident reports: via mobile app with photo evidence and direct insurer links.
Main Police Objectives in 2025
- Public safety: no paint, talcum, dirty water, or targeting monks/elders;
- Order control: zones divided into 'family', 'youth', and 'ritual';
- Fast response: medical stations every 500m, evacuation within 7 minutes;
- Ecology: fines for plastic, disposable hoses, river pollution;
- LTR resident support: dedicated zones, translators, priority service.
Where Is Control Strictest?
- Bangkok (Khao San Road): enhanced checkpoints, drones, water gun limit (500ml);
- Chiang Mai (Old City): no loud parties near temples;
- Pattaya (Walking Street): 24/7 surveillance, alcohol only in dining zones;
- Ayutthaya: historical park — cultural rituals only, no mass fights;
- Phuket (Patong): access-controlled zones with electronic wristbands.
Outlook 2025–2030
Expected:
- Development of metaverse venues for safe digital water splashing;
- Integration of smart wristbands with health and location data;
- Global recognition of Thailand’s festival safety model as one of the most advanced;
- Growth in foreign residents (LTR) participating in event organization.
"Songkran is joy, not chaos," said National Police Chief General Tosakon Thansuvanakul. "In 2025, we use technology to protect traditions, people, and nature."
