TAT leverages social media and visual campaigns: One and Only Project, Thailand from the Air. How digital marketing promotes Thai culture?

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) actively uses social networks and visual campaigns to promote the country’s cultural heritage. Among the most successful initiatives are the One and Only Project – Discover Thainess and the photo album Thailand from the Air, both of which have gained international recognition and awards.

One and Only Project (Discover Thainess)

Launched in February 2015, the One and Only contest invited social media users to share photos and videos that capture the essence of "Thainess" — the authentic spirit of Thai culture. Participants could choose from five themes:

  • Thai cuisine,
  • traditional dances,
  • muay-thai,
  • flower garland making,
  • learning the Thai language.

After submissions, a jury selected the best entries. Finalists were invited to Thailand to experience the culture firsthand and create new content on location. Winners received trips and access to exclusive cultural events.

Photo Album: Thailand from the Air

Thailand from the Air is a stunning collection of aerial photographs showcasing the country’s natural beauty, cities, and cultural landscapes from above. More than just a visual journey, it became an official TAT publication.

In 2016, it won the Gold Award in the "Travel Guide Book" category at the prestigious PATA Grand & Gold Awards — a recognition of its visual excellence and storytelling power.

International recognition

Both initiatives were honored at the PATA Travel Mart 2016 in Jakarta — a leading platform for Asia’s tourism industry:

  • Grand Award — for the One and Only Project in the “Culture and Heritage” category;
  • Gold Award — for Thailand from the Air in “Travel Journalism and Guidebooks”.

These awards confirmed TAT’s successful strategy of positioning Thailand as a modern, creative, and culturally rich tourist destination.

Why this matters today

The success of these projects remains relevant, as they laid the foundation for modern digital tourism:

  • User engagement: Contests turn tourists into content co-creators — a form of viral, organic marketing.
  • Youth focus: Initiatives target digital-savvy travelers who share experiences on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
  • Economic impact: Cultural campaigns boost travel interest, stimulating the tourism economy.
  • Culture meets marketing: A model for respectfully and creatively presenting heritage through modern media.

What’s next?

TAT continues to develop similar formats: open contests, visual storytelling platforms, and influencer collaborations. This reflects a strategy to position Thailand as a dynamic, tech-savvy, and culturally rich destination — where tradition and innovation go hand in hand.

The future of tourism is storytelling — and Thailand is already leading the way.
