In 2025, Bangkok continues large-scale deployment of a smart safety system integrating digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and emergency services. This approach addresses growing urban challenges: crime, traffic accidents, natural disasters, and overloaded emergency response.
According to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and Metropolitan Police Bureau, response time to incidents has decreased by 47% over the past three years, while digital reporting now accounts for 89% of all calls.
Digital Safety Infrastructure
The city-wide system includes several interconnected components:
- Smart Safety Kiosks: over 650 units across all districts, replacing the experimental 'green boxes' of 2013;
- 24/7 City Command Center: integrates data from police, EMS, fire, and traffic services;
- Network of 78,000 AI-powered cameras: detect falls, fights, unattended objects, and suspicious behavior;
- Patrol drones: 120 UAVs monitor parks, markets, and public events in real time.
How Emergency Help Works
Residents or tourists can request help via:
- Pressing the button on a Smart Kiosk: sends GPS, activates microphone and video call with operator;
- Using the Bangkok Safe app: voice SOS, photo/video upload, automatic location sharing;
- Messaging LINE bot @BangkokSafety: support in Thai, English, Russian, and Chinese.
After activation, the system automatically dispatches the nearest patrol unit — police, medical, or traffic — based on incident type. Average response time: 4.2 minutes (down from 9.8 in 2020).
AI for Prevention & Detection
Artificial intelligence analyzes camera and drone feeds:
- Detected elderly falls — especially in restrooms and crosswalks;
- Fights and assaults flagged — alerts issued within 15 seconds;
- Smoke detection — enables rapid fire department response;
- Traffic flow analysis — optimizes ambulance and tow truck routing.
Prevention & Education
Beyond response, the city focuses on proactive safety:
- Crime heat maps: published monthly at bma.go.th/safety;
- Safety schools: courses for students, seniors, and tourists;
- Hotline 1555: anonymous reports of suspicious activity;
- Partnerships with taxi and ride-hailing apps: driver training in first aid and crisis response.
Preventing Abuse
To deter false alarms:
- Video records every kiosk user;
- False alarms are logged and investigated — penalties up to 1 year in prison or 10,000 THB fine (Thai Penal Code Art. 136);
- Repeat offenders are blacklisted from using services.
Outlook 2025–2030
Expected:
- Launch of neural network predictive system based on 5 years of data;
- Deployment of robot patrols in malls and metro stations;
- Integration of metaverse simulations for rescuer training;
- Global recognition of Bangkok as one of the world’s safest smart cities.
"Our technology doesn’t replace people — it makes them safer," said Bangkok Governor Chadchart Charnprayoon. "Safety is the right of everyone who lives in or passes through our city."
