Pattaya begins construction of a 1-km reinforced concrete wall on Pratamnak Road to prevent landslides during rainy season. Supported by PCD. Updated for 2025.

As part of preparations for the 2025 rainy season, Pattaya City has launched a major infrastructure project — the construction of a reinforced concrete retaining wall along Pratamnak Road, one of the city’s most vulnerable areas. The project aims to prevent landslides that annually threaten the safety of residents and tourists in this hilly district.

Why Pratamnak Road Is a Risk Zone

Pratamnak Road is a scenic route running along a hillside between Pattaya and Jomtien. Due to steep slopes, dense development, and heavy rains during the monsoon season (May–October), ground movement and landslides occur regularly. In 2018, 2020, and 2023, landslides partially blocked the road and damaged building foundations.

Project Overview

The new retaining wall will span 980 meters (approx. 1 km) with a height of 2.5 to 3 meters. The structure is a monolithic reinforced concrete wall with a deep foundation, designed to withstand up to 50 tons per linear meter.

Key features:

  • Internal drainage channels to divert rainwater
  • Perforated outlets every 10 meters to reduce hydrostatic pressure
  • Anchor piles 6–8 meters deep for slope stabilization
  • Green landscaping on the upper slope to prevent erosion

Expected lifespan: 10–15 years with regular maintenance.

Support from the Pollution Control Department

The project is approved and supported by Thailand’s Pollution Control Department (PCD) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. PCD oversees environmental impact monitoring and construction compliance.

A PCD representative stated: "This project combines engineering protection with environmental sustainability. The drainage system prevents waterlogging, and greening reduces erosion."

Budget and Timeline

Total budget: 128 million THB (~3.5 million USD), funded by Pattaya City and partial support from the Ministry of Interior.

Construction began in February 2025. Work is phased to minimize traffic disruption. Completion is expected by September 2025, before the peak of the rainy season.

Current Status (March 2025)

As of March 2025:

  • Geodetic surveys and design completed
  • Drilling of anchor piles underway on the first section (Soi 6 to Soi 8)
  • Temporary signage and barriers installed
  • Public awareness campaign in progress

Conclusion

The Pratamnak Road retaining wall is a critical step in enhancing Pattaya’s resilience during monsoon season. Combining modern engineering and eco-friendly design, the project is expected to reduce landslide risks by 80–90% and ensure safer roads and infrastructure in one of the city’s most popular areas.
