In 2025, the Naga Fireballs Festival in Nong Khai province will once again attract hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world. One of Thailand’s most mysterious natural phenomena occurs on the Mekong River during Pavarana — October 12–14.
According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), over 180,000 guests are expected, including 24,000 LTR residents. More than 92% of hotels in Nong Khai, Udon Thani, and Bueng Kan are already booked.
What Are the Naga Fireballs?
Each year at the end of the lunar cycle, thousands of glowing orbs, 20–50 cm in diameter, rise from the depths of the Mekong River and vanish into the night sky. The phenomenon lasts from seconds to half an hour. Locals believe it is the manifestation of the serpent deity Phaya Naga.
Scientific theories offer alternative explanations:
- Biogas theory: methane from riverbed sediment ignites upon contact with air;
- piezoelectricity: pressure from sedimentary rocks generates electric charge;
- Atmospheric conditions: humidity, temperature, and magnetic fields combine.
Research continues under the National Agency for Research and Innovation (NARST).
