In 2017, Thailand witnessed an unusual sale: a decorative lobster of the Procambarus clarkii species, nicknamed Chaokhunchang, was sold for 1 million and 1 baht. The deal took place in Nakhon Pathom and remains one of the most talked-about in the aquarium trade.
How the Deal Went Down
28-year-old farmer Kanokpum Siriwat, who bred lobsters as a side business, turned down two earlier offers — 100,000 and 500,000 THB. But on the eve of the Chinese New Year, restaurant owner Prathan Liampaisan offered the full million and one baht — and the deal was done.
Why Was This Lobster So Valuable?
Chaokhunchang had a unique brown-red coloration, selectively bred by Kanokpum. Along with the lobster, the buyer received a female named Sida and 300 larvae — making the deal even more valuable for future breeding.
Rarity and Luck
Kanokpum openly called the breed his pride. The unique coloration and bloodline became the hallmark of his farm. The buyer, meanwhile, hoped the lobster would bring not just profit, but good fortune to his restaurant business.
At the time of sale, Chaokhunchang was only six months old. Its youth and genetic purity made it a standout specimen.
The Ornamental Lobster Market in 2025
Such deals remain rare. Although the decorative lobster market in Thailand is growing, and rare specimens can still sell for hundreds of thousands of THB, million-baht sales are exceptional.
This story continues to inspire breeders to develop new color lines and breeds. For Thai farmers, investing in selective breeding is becoming a serious business — not just a hobby.
Export and Expansion
Today, Procambarus clarkii is actively exported to Southeast Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Ornamental lobster farming is gaining traction as a profitable niche for those willing to invest in research and breeding.
Conclusion
A lobster worth a million THB is not just a marketing stunt — it's a real example of how rarity, timing and presentation can turn a hobby into a profitable venture. The Chaokhunchang story remains a symbol of opportunity in the Thai aquarium trade.
