How Thailand became one of Southeast Asia’s most connected nations. DEPA, TRUE, AIS data.

In 2025, internet penetration in Thailand reaches 98% of the population, making the country one of the most digitally advanced in Southeast Asia. According to the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (DEPA), the number of active internet users exceeds 68 million people, including tourists and LTR residents.

This marks a full transition from older technologies (3G, Wi-Fi hotspots) to high-speed 5G, e-government services, and digital property management.

What Has Changed Since 2014?

  • Internet users: grew from 26.5M (2012) to over 68M (2025);
  • Mobile internet: used by more than 95% of users;
  • Speed: average mobile speed — 185 Mbps (4th in Asia);
  • 5G: coverage in all 77 provinces, including Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai.

Government Initiatives 2025

The government continues developing digital infrastructure:

  • Thailand Digital ID: unified digital profile for access to public services;
  • e-Land: online real estate registration via e.landoffice.ai;
  • e-Chanote: digital title with QR code and e-signature;
  • Smart Cities: Bangkok, Pattaya, Chonburi becoming smart cities with IoT sensors and AI monitoring.

Role of the Private Sector

Operators AIS, TrueMove H, DTAC ensure stable coverage and compete in the market:

  • AIS: leader in 5G speed and coverage;
  • TrueMove H: rolling out eSIM and metaverse services;
  • DTAC: focus on sustainability and ESG projects.

How Internet Affects Foreigners?

For LTR residents, digital nomads, and investors, digitization offers:

  • Remote access: to bank accounts, tax filings, land titles;
  • Online services: booking medical appointments, children's education, legal consultations;
  • Security: two-factor authentication, biometrics, blockchain;
  • Investments: buying property via NFT certificates and smart contracts.

Outlook 2025–2030

Expected:

  • Full shift to paperless government;
  • Launch of national digital currency (CBDC);
  • Global recognition of Thailand’s digital service system as one of the world’s most reliable;
  • Growth in foreign residents (LTR) using digital channels for life and business.

"We’re not just connecting people to the internet. We’re building a digital society," said Minister of Digital Technologies Prasert Chanthanachai. "In 2025, every citizen — regardless of age, origin, or status — has equal access to the future."
