In 2025, Thailand continues to strengthen its reputation as a supplier of high-quality natural honey to international markets. Despite rumors about fake Chinese honey being laundered through Thailand, there are no official confirmations of such schemes. In fact, Thai and international regulators have tightened controls on honey origin and composition.
Reality: Is Honey Being Laundered Through Thailand?
In 2024–2025, neither the FDA (USA), EFSA (EU), nor Thai FDA have reported large-scale cases of Chinese fake honey being laundered via Thailand.
However, experts from UN FAO and ASEAN Food Safety Network acknowledge: risks exist, especially in high-trade regions. But Thailand is not considered a primary transit hub.
According to the Thai Department of Agriculture (DOA), all exported honey batches undergo:
- Laboratory testing for HMF, sugar, syrups (including C4/C5 syrups mimicking nectar);
- Antibiotic screening (chloramphenicol, streptomycin);
- Heavy metal analysis (lead, cadmium, mercury);
- Origin verification via TraceNet system.
Honey Production & Export from Thailand
Thailand produces about 3,500 tons of honey annually, with 1,200 tons exported (DOA, 2024). Main types:
- Floral honey — from Chiang Mai, Lampang, Nakhon Sawan;
- Forest honey — collected in national parks (rare, premium);
- Litchi, rambutan, mango honey — seasonal, popular in Asia.
Main importers:
- Japan — 38% of exports;
- USA — 27%;
- Germany — 15%;
- Canada and Australia — 12%.
Quality Control: How Thailand Fights Counterfeits
Since 2024, strict measures have been introduced:
- Mandatory GAP certification for apiaries — over 80% of producers are certified;
- Ban on processing imported honey without full analysis and license;
- Approved exporters registry — only 42 companies can export to USA and EU;
- Blockchain traceability pilot launched in Chumphon and Uthai Thani.
What Do International Regulators Say?
According to the FDA USA (2024 annual report):
- Thai honey is not on the high-risk list for adulteration;
- No import refusals of Thai honey shipments since 2020;
- Thailand participates in the Preclearance Inspection Program — pre-shipment checks.
The European Commission has also not blacklisted Thailand as a honey supplier.
The Myth of 'Chinese Honey via Thailand'
Rumors about honey laundering through Thailand have circulated since the 2010s but are not supported by evidence. As stated by the Thai Chamber of Commerce:
"This is misinformation. Thailand is not a transit hub for Chinese honey. We have strict rules, and violations lead to license revocation. Our honey is a national pride."
Outlook 2025–2026
Expected:
- 8–10% annual growth in Thai honey exports;
- Development of organic and functional types (with propolis, royal jelly);
- Participation in international expos (Anuga, SIAL, Food & Hotel Asia).
