In 2025, Thailand continues implementing its National Energy and Sustainable Transport Strategy, aimed at reducing fossil fuel dependence and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. While in 2012 the country was just beginning its shift to gasohol, today bioethanol is standard, and the future belongs to electric vehicles.
According to the Ministry of Energy and the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE), by 2025:
- Over 90% of gasoline in the country is bioethanol blends (E10, E20, E85);
- Pure gasoline (RON 91, 95) is sold only as specialty fuel for older vehicles and industrial use;
- Daily fuel consumption: 22 million liters, of which 18 million are bio-blends.
What Fuels Are Available in 2025?
At PTT, BCP, Bangchak, and other stations:
- E20 (20% ethanol): main fuel, suitable for 98% of gasoline vehicles;
- E85 (85% ethanol): for hybrid and flex-fuel vehicles;
- B20 (20% biodiesel): for diesel vehicles and buses;
- CNG (Compressed Natural Gas): for taxis and public transport;
- EV charging stations: over 5,000 nationwide.
Bioethanol Production
Ethanol is produced from:
- Cassava (manioc) — 60%;
- Sugarcane — 30%;
- Corn — 10%.
Major producers: Thai Ethanol, Mitr Phol, C. Itoh. Annual output: 2.8 million kiloliters.
EV Infrastructure Development
Since 2023, Thailand has become the ASEAN leader in EV adoption. In 2025:
- Over 150,000 electric vehicles registered;
- 5,200 public charging stations (2,800 fast, 2,400 standard);
- Government subsidies up to 150,000 THB per EV purchase;
- Tax incentives for manufacturers (BYD, Great Wall, Nissan, Tesla).
Transition to Carbon Neutrality
Goal: reduce transport emissions by 50% by 2030. Measures:
- Phased ban on new gasoline car sales from 2035;
- Conversion of all public transport to electricity and CNG by 2030;
- Development of green hydrogen as future fuel;
- Integration of solar power at gas stations.
Benefits for Drivers
In 2025, motorists receive:
- Lower fuel costs: E20 is 3–5 THB/l cheaper than regular gasoline;
- Discounts on parking and tolls for EVs;
- Improved air quality — 25% reduction in PM2.5 in Bangkok since 2020;
- State support via apps and digital services.
Outlook 2025–2030
Expected:
- Biofuel share — up to 95% of all gasoline blends;
- 1 million EVs on roads;
- Creation of a national hydrogen refueling network;
- International recognition of Thailand’s green transport model.
"We’re not just changing fuel — we’re changing the future," said Energy Minister Pirapon Wongwanich. "From bioethanol to electricity — the path to clean air and a sustainable economy."
