Current entry rules for Thailand 2025: passport validity, visas, LTR, health insurance. Immigration Bureau data.

In 2025, Thailand’s entry rules have significantly changed compared to 2010–2014. The outdated debate about 'six months passport validity' is no longer relevant — today’s system is based on security, long-term residency, and digitalization.

According to the Immigration Bureau of Thailand and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the following rules apply to citizens of Russia and CIS countries.

1. Passport Validity

Required: passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry.
This rule has not changed since 2014 and remains mandatory.

  • If the passport expires earlier — airlines will deny boarding;
  • Airlines like Thai Airways, Qatar Airways, Emirates use the global IATA Timatic system, where this rule is strictly enforced.

2. Visa Regime

Russian citizens can enter Thailand via:

  • Visa-free: up to 30 days by land or sea;
  • Visa on Arrival (VOA): up to 15 days (air only);
  • E-Tourist Visa (TR VISA): up to 60 days with extension option;
  • LTR Visa (Long-Term Resident): up to 10 years without annual exit.

We recommend applying for an e-visa in advance at: www.thaievisa.go.th

3. Health Insurance

Since 2023, insurance is mandatory with coverage:

  • At least 50,000 USD for illness or injury;
  • At least 10,000 USD for quarantine;
  • Must cover COVID-19 treatment.

Document is checked at check-in and upon arrival.

4. Proof of Financial Means

Immigration may request:

  • 10,000 THB (~285 USD) per person;
  • 20,000 THB (~570 USD) per family.

Random checks are conducted.

5. What Is LTR and Why Does It Matter?

The LTR Visa is a new program for investors, retirees, digital nomads, and skilled professionals:

  • Duration: 5+5 years (renewable);
  • Requirements: investment from 10 million THB, income of 80,000 THB/month, retirement age + 800,000 THB in bank;
  • Benefits: right to work, start business, tax incentives.

6. Why Do Rumors About 'Soft Rules' Appear?

As in 2014, airlines (including Thai Airways) sometimes publish errors or test new policies. However:

  • Official rules are changed only by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
  • Thai Airways has no authority to set visa norms;
  • Tour operators must follow government requirements.

Outlook 2025–2030

Expected:

  • Launch of digital passports and biometric registration;
  • Development of metaverse platforms for visa applications;
  • Global recognition of LT-resident as the new standard for long-term living;
  • Simplified entry for citizens of ASEAN, GCC, Japan, South Korea.

"We’re not just opening borders. We’re building the future of mobility," said Immigration Director Sarach Aytitha. "Every guest should feel safe and confident."
