In 2025, Thailand continues its comprehensive program for the rehabilitation and education of children in the southern provinces — Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat, where social tensions have persisted for decades. Instead of one-off charity courses like those in 2011–2012, a sustainable support system now combines education, psychological care, and intercultural dialogue.
According to the Ministry of Education (MOE) and UNICEF Thailand, over 18,000 children annually access specialized programs, including those who have experienced violence or are in vulnerable situations.
English as a Bridge to the Future
English proficiency remains key:
- 'English for Peace' program reaches 160 at-risk teens aged 13–16;
- Teaching focuses on speaking, pronunciation, and cross-cultural communication;
- Digital platforms (Duolingo, BBC Learning English) used in schools and rehab centers;
- Braille materials and voice assistants for visually impaired and blind students.
Top performers receive named scholarships from SCG and Bangkok Post Foundation for further education.
Inclusive Education for All
Special accommodations are made for children with disabilities:
- Bilingual schools: Thai, Malay, and international curricula (O-NET, IGCSE);
- Bilingual teachers: trained at Hat Yai University;
- IT labs with adaptive software for blind, deaf, and autistic children;
- Mobile learning centers — for remote villages.
Psychological Rehabilitation
A key success factor is trauma-informed care:
- School psychologists: one per every 3 schools;
- Support groups and art therapy — through partnership with UNICEF;
- Hotline 1383: anonymous help for children and parents;
- 'Peace Within' program: meditation, yoga, music therapy.
Role of Business & Civil Society
Companies and foundations actively participate:
- Siam Cement Group (SCG): sponsors IT labs and English courses;
- Bangkok Post Foundation: publishes success stories, hosts workshops;
- True Corporation: provides free internet for learning centers;
- GOTAFE: trains youth for careers in tech and tourism.
ASEAN Ties & the Future
English learning is part of a broader strategy:
- Youth exchanges with Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore;
- Online courses in soft skills and digital literacy;
- Entrepreneurship support for graduates;
- Integration into EEC economy through future-ready education.
Outlook 2025–2030
Expected:
- Establishment of a Regional Center for Peace and Education in Pattani;
- Launch of e-Southern Youth platform for online learning and job placement;
- Development of interfaith dialogue through school projects;
- International recognition of Thailand’s model of peacebuilding through education.
"We’re not just teaching language — we’re rebuilding trust and opening doors," said Bangkok Post Foundation Director Charas Chansuthus. "Every child here is the South’s future."
