In 2025, Thailand implements biometrics in airports, banks, and government services. MDES & ICAO data.

In 2025, Thailand has become a leader in Southeast Asia in biometric security. While in the past it was limited to pilot projects, today facial recognition, fingerprint scanning, and iris detection are part of everyday life.

According to the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), biometric technologies are being actively implemented in:

1. Air Travel & Borders

  • e-Gates: automated terminals at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, and U-Tapao airports;
  • Facial recognition: passengers clear passport control in 10–15 seconds;
  • Digital passport: testing NFC cards with biometric data;
  • Global standards: Thailand follows ICAO Doc 9303 guidelines.

Full coverage for all international passengers is planned by 2026.

2. Banking & Fintech

  • Face ID & Touch ID: mandatory for mobile banking apps (SCB, KBank, TrueMoney);
  • Voice biometrics: used in call centers;
  • Fingerprints: for contactless payments at stores via smartphones.

Fraud cases have decreased by 68% since 2020.

3. Government Services

  • Digital ID: access to taxes, healthcare, education;
  • Online applications: business registration, LTR visa processing;
  • Blockchain-based ID: tamper-proof data storage.

4. Private Sector

  • Smart homes: entry via face or fingerprint;
  • Offices: biometric access control;
  • Malls: payment without phone or card.

What About Robots?

Yes, interest in robotics is growing in Thailand:

  • Delivery robots: in hospitals and campuses;
  • Reception robots: in select hotels;
  • Bartending robots: in entertainment zones;
  • ABU Robocon: annual competition continues, now focused on AI and autonomous systems.

However, restaurants with fully robotic service remain rare and more of a show than a practical norm.

Outlook 2025–2030

Expected:

  • Launch of neural interfaces for device control;
  • Development of metaverses with biometric authentication;
  • Global recognition of Thailand’s digital trust system as one of the world’s most reliable;
  • Creation of a national biometric registry with GDPR-level data protection.

"Security no longer means locks and walls. It means trust," said Minister of Digital Economy Prasert Chanthanachai. "Biometrics is not control. It’s freedom to move."
