Prefer to communicate via messengers

In 2025, taxi drivers in Thailand communicate with tourists via AI translators, apps, and digital courses. MOTS & DSD data.

In 2025, taxi drivers in Bangkok and other Thai tourist hubs no longer rely solely on English proficiency. Instead, they use technology, digital platforms, and structured training to deliver a comfortable and safe experience for foreign tourists.

According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MOTS), over 87% of taxi drivers in Bangkok now use smartphones equipped with translation apps, navigation, and ride-hailing tools. This is the result of a nationwide upskilling program launched after the pandemic.

From 'Hello' to Artificial Intelligence

If in 2015, 1,000 drivers learned basic English via radio FM 99.5, today:

  • Over 15,000 drivers have completed online courses in English, Chinese, and Russian;
  • Every driver uses an app with voice translation (Google Translate, LINE Translator);
  • Taxis feature QR codes with audio guides in 6 languages;
  • Digital displays show destination and fare in the passenger’s language.

How Service Works Today

The process is now transparent and seamless:

  1. Passenger books via Grab, Bolt, or InDrive — the app auto-detects language;
  2. Driver receives address on screen, even if written in Chinese;
  3. En route — voice assistant says key phrases: "We’re almost there," "Do you have luggage?", "Can we make a stop?";
  4. Payment via QR code, Apple Pay, WeChat Pay, or cash.

For drivers, this means 34% more rides from foreigners.

Government Initiative: 'Taxi of the Future'

The Ministry of Labour's Department of Skill Development (DSD) launched:

  • Free 'Digital Driver' courses: English, app usage, safety, service ethics;
  • 'Friendly Driver' certification: certified drivers get priority at airports and hotels;
  • E-mobility support: EV taxi subsidies and free charging;
  • Hotline 1588: real-time help for drivers and passengers.

Private Sector Role

Companies are actively involved:

  • Grab Thailand: introduced 'In-Car Translation' — real-time AI two-way interpreter;
  • True Corporation: provides free internet for drivers;
  • Thai Smile Taxi: new fleet with passenger tablets and Wi-Fi.

What Drivers Say

"I used to fear taking foreigners," shares Sukhumvit driver Anun Chaiyarat. "Now I know: even if we don’t understand words, the phone speaks for us. And tips are better."

Outlook 2025–2030

Expected:

  • Launch of metaverse driver training — VR simulations of tourist dialogues;
  • Development of autonomous taxis in EEC zones;
  • Introduction of 'Multilingual Driver' rating in apps;
  • Global recognition of Thailand’s 'smart taxi' model.

"We’re not making everyone linguists — we’re giving them tools," said DSD Director Supakorn Phuwasuwan. "Service isn’t about language. It’s about trust."
