In 2016, the Ministry of Transport of Thailand unveiled an ambitious infrastructure development plan for 2016–2020 with a budget of 1.796 trillion THB. Projects included modernizing Suvarnabhumi Airport, Laem Chabang Port, and building new railway hubs. Today, in 2025, these goals have not only been achieved — they have become the foundation for a new era of smart, eco-friendly, and integrated transportation.
According to the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP), total investment in transport infrastructure from 2016 to 2025 exceeded 3.2 trillion THB (~90 billion USD). This is one of the largest infrastructure leaps in the country’s history.
What Was Delivered from the 2016 Plan?
- Suvarnabhumi Airport: third runway completed, capacity increased to 80 million passengers/year;
- Laem Chabang Port: became Southeast Asia’s largest container port with capacity of 15 million TEU/year;
- Railway Network: 18 new stations built, including key hubs in Pattaya, Chonburi, and Rayong;
- International Routes: launch of the Thailand–Laos–China railway (part of Belt and Road Initiative).
What’s New in 2025?
On the foundation of past projects, new initiatives have emerged:
1. Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC)
- High-Speed Train Bangkok–Pattaya–Laem Chabang: speed up to 250 km/h, travel time — 45 minutes;
- Aero-Express: direct links between Suvarnabhumi, U-Tapao, and Don Mueang airports;
- Smart Highways: AI monitoring, EV charging, and 5G connectivity.
2. Smart Cities & Sustainable Transport
- Electric Buses: 100% of public transit fleet in Bangkok and Pattaya is electric;
- Cycling Infrastructure: over 1,200 km of bike lanes nationwide;
- Autonomous Shuttles: deployed in EEC zones and tourist clusters;
- Mobile App 'Smart Transit TH': unified ticketing for metro, bus, train, ferry.

Outlook 2025–2030
Expected:
- Launch of magnetic levitation (maglev) train between Bangkok and Phuket;
- Development of air mobility (eVTOL) for domestic transport;
- Introduction of metaverse-based route planning;
- Global recognition of Thailand as one of Asia’s most transport-advanced nations.
"We’re no longer just building roads — we’re building a mobility ecosystem," said Thailand’s Minister of Transport Sakoltee Sapswan. "The future isn’t about speed. It’s about sustainability and intelligence."
