In 2025, direct investments from Russia to Thailand are minimal. Focus shifted to LTR, private deals, real estate. BOI & DITP data.

In 2025, economic relations between Russia and Thailand are undergoing deep transformation. While 2010–2018 saw rising tourist flows, interest in real estate, and attempts to build trade ties, today official economic partnership is virtually absent.

According to the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) and Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI), foreign direct investment from Russia totaled less than 32 million THB (~900,000 USD) in 2024 — less than 0.01% of total FDI.

What Happened to Big Business?

Organized meetings like the one described in 2011 are no longer held at the government level. Reasons:

  • Geopolitical situation: Thailand maintains neutrality but aligns with the US, EU, Japan, and China;
  • Sanctions and financial restrictions: difficulties with transfers and banking;
  • No strategic interest: Russia is not a priority for BOI.

The Thai-Russian Chamber of Commerce plays no significant role in the country’s economy today.

How Has Tourism Changed?

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT):

  • 2018: 1.014 million tourists from Russia;
  • 2023: 187,000;
  • 2024: 192,000;
  • 2025 forecast: under 200,000.

Tourists still arrive, but mostly individually, without organized tourism.

What About Real Estate?

Investments continue, but at a different level:

  • Deal volume: about 4% of all foreign purchases (was over 15% in 2011);
  • Purpose: personal living, LTR status, not speculative income;
  • Format: often via trusted persons or Thai companies;
  • Locations: Pattaya, Jomtien, Pratumnak, Hua Hin.

What About Manufacturing in Thailand?

The claim that IBM, Microsoft, or Coca-Cola manufacture in Thailand is incorrect. In reality:

  • Automotive: Toyota, Honda, BYD, Great Wall — market leaders;
  • Electronics: Western Digital (HDDs), Foxconn, Flex — key players;
  • Food industry: ThaiBev, CP Group, Nestlé, Unilever;
  • EVs & batteries: CATL, GPSC, Neta Auto — future of the industry.

Thailand ranks 9th globally in car production (2.38 million in 2024), ahead of the UK, Italy, and Russia.

Outlook 2025–2030

Expected:

  • Growth in LTR residents from CIS countries (not just Russia), via private channels;
  • Development of digital nomads — remote workers living in Thailand;
  • Global recognition of Thailand as a hub for living, not business with Russia;
  • Maintenance of cultural and family ties, but without large-scale economic projects.

"We welcome everyone who wants to live in Thailand," said BOI Director Narit Therdsteerasukdi. "But our investment priorities are technology, sustainability, and global markets, not past alliances."
