In 2025, Thailand is covered by 5G, developing smart cities & preparing for 6G. NBTC & DEPA data.

In 2025, Thailand is undergoing a digital transformation that was only imaginable in 2014. While the rollout of 4G was once a milestone, today the country lives in the era of 5G, smart cities, blockchain, and artificial intelligence.

According to the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), 98% of Thailand’s population has access to high-speed internet, and 76% of households are connected via fiber. In major cities, speeds reach up to 1.8 Gbps on 5G.

Where Is 5G Available?

The 5G network covers all key areas:

  • Bangkok: full coverage, including subway and suburbs;
  • Pattaya: Jomtien, Pratumnak, U-Tapao — up to 1.2 Gbps;
  • Phuket: beaches, airport, villas — 5G everywhere;
  • Chiang Mai: city center, universities, digital hubs;
  • Islands: Samui, Pangan, Tao — 5G at all tourist sites.

Leaders: AIS, TrueMove H, DTAC — investing billions in network expansion.

What Does 5G Mean for Life & Business?

This is not just fast internet. It’s new infrastructure:

  • Smart cities: traffic lights, cameras, parking managed via AI;
  • Telemedicine: real-time consultations, remote surgeries;
  • Education: VR classrooms, lag-free online learning;
  • Security: facial recognition, drone patrols;
  • Transport: autonomous shuttles in EEC and airports.

What About 3G and 4G?

Technologies are evolving:

  • 3G: being phased out — planned completion by 2027;
  • 4G: remains as backup for rural areas;
  • 5G: primary network for cities, IoT, AI, metaverse.

Outlook: From 5G to 6G

Under the Digital Thailand 2030 plan, research is already underway:

  • 6G: speeds up to 10 Tbps, latency under 0.1 ms;
  • Quantum communication: secure data transfer;
  • Satellite internet: coverage for mountains and remote islands;
  • Metaverse: city management via VR.

Projects are developed jointly with Google, Huawei, NECTEC, and Chulalongkorn University.

How Does This Affect Real Estate?

Today, internet is part of property value:

  • ESG projects: 5G and fiber are mandatory;
  • Smart homes: voice control, AI climate, CCTV;
  • Rental yield: 5G-equipped units rent for 15–20% more;
  • LTR status: digital infrastructure is a key selection factor.

"Internet is no longer a service. It’s the foundation of life," said Minister of Digital Economy Prasert Chanthanachai. "Today, a home without 5G is the past."
