How ASEAN-China strategic partnership is evolving. ASEAN & BOI data.

In 2025, the cooperation between ASEAN and China has entered a new phase: while in the past the focus was on increasing trade volume, today the priorities are technological integration, sustainability, and supply chain security.

According to the ASEAN Secretariat, bilateral trade reached 789 billion USD in 2024, making China the bloc’s largest trading partner for the 16th year in a row. Over 38% of foreign investments into ASEAN countries come from China, including projects in EVs, AI, green energy, and digital infrastructure.

What Has Changed Since 2014?

  • From FTA to deep integration: launch of the ASEAN-China Digital Corridor for seamless data exchange;
  • Technology over raw materials: growth in exports from Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia in electronics, semiconductors, and batteries;
  • ESG standards: all new joint projects undergo environmental and social review;
  • Security: dialogue on the South China Sea continues, but focus has shifted to joint fishery management and ecology.

Thailand’s Role in 2025

Thailand remains one of China’s key regional partners:

  • EV Hub: CATL, BYD, Great Wall Motors — investments >1.2 trillion THB in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC);
  • Logistics hub: high-speed rail Bangkok–Laos–China launched in 2024;
  • Manufacturing: 68 new factories with Chinese capital opened since 2023;
  • Digital economy: joint projects in AI, metaverse, and blockchain.

Investments & Real Estate

Economic growth directly impacts the property market:

  • Demand: over 22,000 Chinese citizens legally reside in Thailand under the LTR program;
  • Investments: Chinese companies buy offices, warehouses, residential complexes in Pattaya, Bangkok, U-Tapao;
  • ROI: properties near EEC and logistics hubs grow 18–24% annually;
  • Integration: Sino-Thai schools, medical centers, cultural spaces.

Outlook 2025–2030

Expected:

  • Full transition to digital contracts and blockchain in trade;
  • Launch of the Green Corridor for eco-friendly goods;
  • Global recognition of the ASEAN-China model as a benchmark for regional cooperation;
  • Growth in foreign residents (LTR) choosing Thailand as home base.

"We’re not just trading goods anymore. We’re building a shared future," said Thailand’s Minister of Commerce Punthip Thanasukan. "In 2025, trust, technology, and sustainability are the foundation of our partnership."
