A new elevated highway, Sri Rattanachai, will soon launch in Bangkok to ease traffic on the city’s Outer Ring Road. As reported by Khaosod, the 16.7-kilometer route runs alongside the Red Line metro, connecting Kanchanaphisek Road and Kamphaengphet Road.
Technical features of the highway
The highway is an elevated structure with 6 lanes (3 in each direction). Built parallel to the railway, the project minimized land acquisition costs and accelerated construction.
It aims to improve transport access to Bangkok’s northern and northwestern areas and reduce congestion on the Outer Ring Road, long overloaded with transit and local traffic.
Free test drive: August 15–17
Before the official opening, drivers can test the highway for free from August 15 to 17. This initiative helps users familiarize themselves with the route, signage, and exit points.
Additional traffic guidance and digital signs are expected during these days to prevent confusion.
Toll fees: pricing and payment
After the trial period, tolls will apply. The fee for passenger cars will be 50 THB. Payment will be via the Easy Pass electronic system, without stopping at toll booths.
Different rates for motorcycles and trucks will be announced later. Discounts for nearby residents may be considered, but no final decision has been made.
Expected benefits
According to Bangkok’s Transport Department, the new highway is expected to:
- cut travel time between northern and central areas by up to 30 minutes;
- reduce congestion on the Outer Ring Road by 20–25%;
- lower emissions due to smoother traffic flow.
The route is also expected to boost investment and residential development in adjacent areas.
Public reaction
Many residents welcome the new highway. "Finally, an alternative to the endless ring road jams," said one driver. Others hope the toll won’t discourage usage.
Authorities stress this is part of a long-term strategy to build a smart transport system combining metro, elevated roads, and digital traffic management.
Conclusion
The opening of the Sri Rattanachai elevated highway is a major step in solving Bangkok’s traffic issues. The free trial from August 15–17 allows drivers to explore the route, with full operation starting August 18. If successful, it could become a model for urban infrastructure in other regional megacities.
