In 2025, relations between Russia and Thailand are undergoing deep transformation. While in 2011 expectations centered on the rise of 'Taksin Shinawatra's allies' and potential revival of major projects with Gazprom, today cooperation has evolved to a new level — through private investments, digital nomads, and the LTR (Long-Term Resident) program.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, as of early 2025, over 28,000 citizens from Russia and CIS countries legally reside in the country. Of these:
- 19,200 hold LTR visas;
- 6,700 hold Elite Visas;
- 2,100 are investors and entrepreneurs.
What Has Changed Since 2011?
- From state to private sector: no major government contracts, but growing private investments in real estate, IT, tourism;
- Digital nomads: over 15,000 Russians work remotely from Thailand;
- Long-term residency: the LTR program replaces Non-B visas, allowing stays up to 10 years without annual exit;
- Investments: from 10 million THB (~280,000 USD) can serve as visa basis.
Where Do Russians Live and Invest in 2025?
Main destinations:
- Pattaya / Jomtien: apartments, condos, mini-hotels;
- Bangkok (Sukhumvit, Ekkamai): business offices, co-working spaces;
- Phuket: villas, eco-projects;
- U-Tapao (EEC): startups, logistics, EV infrastructure.
LTR Program: The New Bridge Between Countries
LTR (Long-Term Resident) is a key attraction factor:
- Duration: up to 10 years without annual exit;
- Requirements: investment from 10M THB or income from 80,000 THB/month;
- Benefits: work, business, tax incentives, family sponsorship;
- Goal: attract 1 million LTR residents by 2030.
Economic Cooperation in 2025
Formal bilateral contracts are limited, but other forms are developing:
- Private investments: Russians buy property, open schools, clinics, restaurants;
- IT & startups: joint projects in AI, blockchain, fintech;
- Education: Russian-language schools, online courses;
- Healthcare: medical tourism, insurance, telemedicine.
Outlook 2025–2030
Expected:
- Growth in CIS property owners in Thailand to 40,000 people;
- Development of private diplomatic channels via business associations;
- Global recognition of Thailand as one of the safest and most tech-savvy hubs for long-term living;
- Rise in families relocating permanently with children, retirees, pets.
"We're no longer waiting for big politicians. We're building the future ourselves," said Director of the International Investment Center at Thailand's MFA Satchan Trisirivard. "In 2025, the Russia-Thailand connection is about people, technology, and trust."
