On January 28, 2024, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn represented His Majesty the King at the solemn ceremony of the Prince Mahidol Award in the throne hall of the Grand Palace in Bangkok. This is one of the most prestigious international awards in medicine and public health, awarded annually since 1992.

About the Prince Mahidol Award

The award was established to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol Adulyadej (1892–1929), honored as the “Father of Modern Medicine in Thailand.” Today, it is administered by the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation, chaired by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

The award is presented annually in two categories:

  • Medicine
  • Public Health

Each laureate receives:

  • A gold medal
  • A certificate
  • A cash prize of 100,000 US dollars

Selection Process

Candidates undergo a rigorous international review. In 2024, over 150 nominations from 28 countries were evaluated using 64 criteria, including scientific impact, innovation, and global reach.

2024 Laureates

This year’s awards recognized outstanding contributions to HIV/AIDS research and global health:

  • Professor David D. Ho (USA) — for pioneering work in antiretroviral therapy and developing combination treatments that transformed HIV into a manageable condition.
  • Dr. Anthony S. Fauci (USA) — for decades of leadership in immunology and infectious diseases, including research on HIV mechanisms.
  • Professor Peter Piot (Belgium/France) and Dr. Jim Yong Kim (USA, former World Bank President) — for establishing new standards in HIV treatment and expanding access in low-income countries.

Note: The Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center played a key role, but the award is given to individuals, not institutions.
