On October 15, Chonburi hosted the traditional buffalo races — a vibrant 140-year-old festival. How did the 2025 edition unfold?

On October 15, the province of Chonburi concluded one of the country’s most vibrant and unique festivals — the traditional buffalo races, held in celebration of the end of Buddhist Lent.

The festival, with a history spanning over 140 years, once again drew thousands of spectators to Nong Kham Market in Ban Bueng district. Despite Thailand’s modernization, this event remains deeply rooted in rural culture and symbolizes the end of the agricultural season.

Races with history and village spirit

The competition carries symbolic meaning: the faster the buffaloes cross the finish line, the greater the fertility of the land and the easier the coming year’s work for farmers. This is how locals interpret the tradition, for whom participation is a matter of pride and honor.

Races were held in three categories based on the animals’ weight and size. Participants — mostly local farmers — had been preparing their animals for months in advance. Daily training, adjusted diets, and close monitoring of physical condition ensured peak performance. Some buffaloes looked truly athletic.

Beauty beyond speed

In addition to the races, the festival featured a Miss Buffalo contest, where the most beautiful and elaborately decorated buffalo was crowned. Owners adorned their animals with ribbons, flowers, and ornamental fabrics, often competing just as fiercely as in the races. Winners received certificates of honor and generous prizes from the organizers.

A festival that brings people together

The event once again became a community gathering. The festival grounds hosted a street food market, stages with folk dances, craft stalls, and a children’s entertainment zone. The atmosphere was truly festive: live music played, schoolchildren performed, and local comedians entertained the crowd.

The Buffalo Race Festival is more than just a show — it’s a vital part of the region’s cultural identity. It honors agricultural roots, respects farmers’ labor, and celebrates the bond between people and the land. For tourists lucky enough to be in Chonburi on that day, it was a surprising and unforgettable discovery of Thailand’s authentic side.
